OLYMPIC MOMENTS THE SEQUEL

Michael Phelps and his amazing 1/100 of a second victory in his 100 meter butterfly. I'd be really annoyed if I was competing against him, but hey, honestly...I think he's a pretty classy guy considering he's obliterating everyone. He's humble in all his interviews, and he was genuinely ecstatic (as opposed to arrogantly unsurprised) when he saw that he had won. I'm also very proud of him for volunteering for a steroid-usage test.

His mom at the end of the race. She was looking rather forlornly at the result board and holding up two fingers. Then all of a sudden, her eyes went wide, her jaw dropped in realization, and she slumped out of view. Ha ha, what a reaction! She is priceless every time her son wins.

The Russian gymnast competing in the women's vault event trying to get an extra cheek-smooch off Alicia Sacrimone. Isn't the standard amount of cheek-smooches two? Right, left, maybe a hug. Done. But no, the Russian girl leaned in for a THIRD cheek smooch after Alicia had moved on! So bizarre! Did anyone else notice this? The camera man captured the girl awkwardly straining her puckered lips, finally making a contact, and Alicia flinching back around in surprise. Oh my awkward.

Jamaican runner Shelly Ann Fraser winning gold in the women's 100 meter dash. Her face was ecstatic; she was thrilled.

Who is this Usain Bolt fellow? Oh my gosh, he just makes everyone else looks bad! The other guys are pumping their arms and legs as fast as they can and Bolt just looks like he's loping along--any ordinary day. Since when is it fair to give a guy like that the last name "Bolt" anyway?

The US sweep in the men's 400 hurtle! I was so excited we finally topped those freaking amazing Jamaicans. Angelo Taylor, who had been absent from Olympic events since his Gold in 2000, said in his track-side interview that "first of all, I want to thank God for this opportunity to compete." Which was admirable. I'm not sold when athletes say that God answered their prayers and helped them to win the Gold medal; but when he was obviously grateful for being healthy and for the "opportunity," well, then I thought he deserved it.

I'm pretty impressed by the pole-vaulting. That just looks freaky. Yelena Isinbayeva was fun to watch, didn't you think? Oh, and, did anyone see the interview our US silver medalist Jenn Stuczynski had afterward with her coach? The guy is a total jerk! Somebody from our NBC press was able to capture on video his every word. Not very flattering. He was condescending and disapproving and he practically debased her for getting silver.

Favorite names: Svetlana Feofanova, Usain Bolt (no sense trying to forget all the predictable puns), Bershawn Jackson

I LOVE THE OLYMPICS

People are always asking me whether or not I watch such-and-such a TV show. Sorry to say that the answer is usually no. I just don’t have a lot of time for TV. Other things higher up on the list. You know. BUT! The Olympics are simply a major exception to that. When the Olympics are going on, I am a fanatic. Every day, I watch and I cheer and I memorize athletes’ names and I try to stay updated on the events. If you know me, then you know that this is an unusual thing. I’m usually passive about celeb news and the latest blah blah blah. I hope I don’t seem ignorant sometimes. Anyway. Seeing as how I’m so into this, I would like to document some of my favorite moments. I mean moments that I actually WANT to remember. Not like when I was a junior in high school and I missed Sarah Hughes’ gold medal skate because I was dealing with the annoyance of being asked to “Xtreme Prom.” Some story that is, eh Cameo?

So here are some highlights so far:

President Bush’s face when the USA team walks out during the opening ceremonies promenade. I don’t care if you do or don’t like good old Bushy—he was adorable. The man was BEAMING! He was grinning like a proud father watching his little toddlers in a parade! I thought he might become emotional.

The Chinese cheerleaders during above mentioned Parade of the Athletes. Oh my gosh. What were they wearing? They looked like really bad wannabe Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. So embarrassing.

After winning his first Gold Medal of this Olympic season, in an interview Michael Phelps was asked: “What was going through your head after you realized you had taken first?” And, grinning of course, he answered, “‘I gotta find my mom!’”

Kerri Walsh losing her engagement band during a block and a whole herd of Chinese staff looking for it in the sand in the spot where the cameras tracked its projectory from her finger. Lucky girl. When one of them found the ring and gave it back to her, she thanked him heartily while putting it back on, then gave him an obligatory “team member salute.” She walked away, but the camera showed the completely whipped China man’s grinning face as if he was trying to commit to memory forever the butt slap he had just received.

Flashback of Misty May throwing her mother’s ashes onto the volleyball court last time she won the gold medal. Isn’t that a little…weird? They say she may do it again this year. When she wins Gold.

The men’s 400-meter swimming relay. How on earth did that Lezak guy come back in the last 25 meters like that? I was astounded and totally thrilled. Another Gold baby! And in the face of the French team whose talk turned out to be nothing more than that.

Mama’s boy Michael grinning like Christmas at his mom in the stands just before accepting his Gold Medal number 11 for the 200-meter freestyle on Tuesday. She was waving back and smiling. So sweet.

Gymnastics. Enough said.

No seriously. Have you seen those guys’ muscles???? The men have these hammering shoulders and Shawn has massive thighs. They’re HUGE!!! I wouldn’t mess with a gymnast, 4’10” or no. I love ALL of the gymnastic events. I was so proud when the USA girls’ scores averaged higher than the Chinese on the vault and on the balance bar. Finals tonight baby!

Clint & Kenny watching gymnastic bloopers on You Tube while me and my sisters watched the live events, and groaning loudly in pain at every fall. My dad says that’s why he watches gymnastics: for the constant intensity of “Are they going to fall?”

The awful commercial that shows a handful of Olympians saying, "I've been waiting for this all my life," and it turns out to be a McDonald's sandwich. Give me a break.

Names like Guo Jingjing and Wu Xaokongwanoliuwhatever. They're just too fun to say.

My family, in our determination to prove that we are hardcore badminton players, attempt to serve the shuttle the same way the Olympians do. Wasn't quite the same effect, but we still have some pretty intense games in my parents' back yard. Clint indulges us.

Clint making fun of one of the commentator’s lisp. What’s that guy’s name?

Anyway, I will post a sequel to this list later. This is great stuff!

HIGH SCHOOL TIMES

(This tag is in honor of our 5 year reunion in two weeks.)
1. Who did you date from your school? Lots of friends, not any boyfriends.

2. What kind of car did you drive? A broken down old Subaru station wagon that had some...er...difficulties starting up. Especially in winter. Rear-ended someone in the parking lot one day as I was waving at one of my friends. Idiot.

3. It’s Friday night...where are you? Hanging out with Cameo & co. Either the Jae Clarke-Ryan Souter group, the Shea Smith-Brandon Back group, or the Justin Hill-Tara Copeland group. But I was usually with my best chick Cameo!

4. Were you a party animal? I sure thought so. But looking back I actually never did anything too exciting.

5. Were you considered a flirt? Uh...probably depends on who you talk to. I had on-days and off-days.

6. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir? Choir, fo sho. I especially loved Chamber Choir and A Capella. So many friends.

7. Were you a nerd? Of course not! I was so cool, I was like the...the...Roger Federer of high school popular people!!!! Um...right.

8. Were you on any varsity teams? Tennis. Madrigals probably counts.

9. Did you get suspended/expelled? No way. Golden child.

10. Can you still sing the fight song? mmm...no, but I bet Clint's dad Jeff can! I can sing my Willow Canyon Elementary School song, though!

11. Who were your favorite teachers? Cummings...Skousen...Cassidy...Winward.

12. Where did you sit during lunch? Oh, usually just in the cafeteria or right outside on the picnic tables.

13. What was your school's full name? Jordan High School

14. School mascot? Beetdigger! Don't mess with the Digger Pride, I'm telling you! I'll go all "Jack Jack Attack" on you if you try to dis.

15. Did you go to Homecoming and who with? Sophmore year: Jae Clarke. Junior year: Diego Martinez. Senior year...wow, did I go? I think I may have been rather burned out of dances at that point. The best story though is Dogpatch, junior year. Me and John Nellermoe were runner-ups for the Daisy May and Li'l Abner contest. Oh my embarrassing.

16. If you could go back and do it again, would you? H no.

17. What do you remember most about graduation? I remember being really happy walking in the Sandy Expo procession to our seats. In all the pictures my parents took of me I look like my face may break from smiling. And I remember the Madrigals singing and as we were singing I thought, "Is it just this room or do we really just sound kinda crappy?"

18. Where did you go senior skip day? What was senior skip day? Dang; missed that boat.

19. Were you in any clubs? NHS, Peer Leadership, All State Choir and All State Tennis

20. Have you gained some weight since then? Well, considering Clint weighs in at about 185ish and I'm usually clinging to him for dear life...YES.

21. Who was your prom date? Sophomore year, Jae Clarke. Senior year, Lance Nelson! Don't get me started on junior prom. I'm at work right now and my coworkers might be frightened if fire starts coming out of my nose and smoke out of my ears.

22. Are you planning on going to your 10 year reunion? Geez, that's kinda too far in advance for me to really say. No plans to avoid it, though.

23. Who do you tag? Annie K, Jessica, Cameo, Liz, Katie, Becky

MEMORIES "TAG"

Kay, so...this just seems too potentially juicilicious. I have to try it. It seems very appropriate, too, given our recent anniversary. I feel so caught up in reminiscing lately. But hey, feel free to share ANY memories, anniversary-related or not. I'll love it.

Here's what you do:
1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you have involving me. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember!
2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you.
